Only more than 60 households get UNHCR’s humanitarian assistance due to the military council’s restrictions

July 23rd, 2021

Only 500 persons from 66 households in downtown Mindat Township got the UNHCR’s humanitarian assistance due to the restrictions imposed by the military council.

A town-elder from Mindat Township said: “Recent day, the relief supplies were distributed to 66 households in five Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. The authorities directed the distribution of relief supplies only to those who are currently living in the camps. There are more than 500 populations. The UNHCR was not allowed to go to the IDP camps in the villages.”

The UNHCR distributed tarpaulin sheets, mosquito nets, mats, blankets, solar-powered lamps, including personal protective equipment for COVID-19 to 5,000 IDPs from 1,000 households in Mindat Township.

The military council allowed the UNHCR to distribute relief aid only in the military-run IDP camps. Only a few IDPs got relief aid as the military council did not allow UNHCR to go to the remote IDP camps where the majority of the IDPs are taking shelter.

There were ten IDP camps in downtown Mindat, run under the permission of the military council. Only people from five IDP camps got the UNHCR’s assistance as the military council did not allow the distribution of relief aid to those from the remaining IDP camps who went home,” said an official from the IDP camp in Mindat.

Since late April, the military council’s troops have made brutal crackdowns on and arrests of the anti-coup protestors in Mindat of Chin State. After that, Mindat-Civil Defense Force (CDF) was formed to fight against the military council. Due to Intense fighting between the military council’s troops and Mindat-CDF, more than 10,000 locals are taking shelter in the villages and forests.
