September 20th, 2021

More than 2,700 locals have been displaced as fighting between Shan armed groups have intensified in Mong Kung Township in southern Shan State.

Fighting between the Restoration Council of Shan State/ Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) and the Shan State Progressive Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) took place for nearly one week.

“We all are afraid as we hear the sounds of heavy weapons consecutively. We have collected our materials in order to get ready to flee to other places. But I don’t know where I will have to flee. Some people go to the villages where the relatives and friends are living. I have been in Naunghlyan village for five or six days,” a Shan woman from Naunghlyan village, who is helping the IDPs.

“The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are in need of blankets and waterproof sheets as it is the rainy season. We are not safe here. According to the list, the number of IDPs has exceeded 2,100. The IDPs are taking shelter in monasteries and schools in Naunghlyan village. Some IDPs have to sleep on power tillers as they have no huts,” she added.

Some IDPs have fled to Nyaunghlyaw, Mannkaungmu and other villages, said those helping the IDPs.

Locals from Wanlon, Wankan, Wankaung, Wanlin, Wonkyan, Panlin, Nammawouk, Naungmon, Namawan and Naungnan villages in Mongkai Townships are taking shelter at the monasteries and schools in Naunglyan village.

In addition, around 700 locals are taking shelter in Matchinoke village in Tonelaw village-tract due to the fighting near Pyinwint, Haymon and Hoekhaing villages in Hokhae village-tract in Mong Kung Township, according to locals.

Although the NMG tried to phone officials of two Shan organizations to ask about fighting in Mong Kung Township, its attempt failed.

In addition to Mong Kung Township in southern Shan State, fighting has been taking place between the RCSS/SSA and the SSPP/SSA, in Kyaukme, Hsipaw, Nanmtu and Namkham Townships in northern Shan State.

Locals have to flee to safer places due to frequent fighting. Most of the IDPs in northern Shan State remain in the IDP camps.
