Around 70 soldiers killed, nine military vehicles destroyed in ambushes

At least 70 soldiers of the military council were killed and many others injured in the ambush attacks by a combined force of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the People’s Defense Force (PDF) on a military convoy of the vehicles loaded with rations and aviation fuel, from Sagaing Region to Kachin State.

On March 4th, a combined force ambushed the military convoy leaving Htigyaing, in Katha District and Mohnyin District, eight times within five days.

An official of the KIA told the KNG: “There were two clashes in Katha District. The military convoy arrived in Mohnyin on March 5th. There were five clashes in Mohnyin. The military convoy arrived in Myitkyina on March 9th. Around 70 soldiers of the military council were killed and nine military vehicles were destroyed during five days. Seven members of the PDF were killed,” said an official of the KIA.”

There were at least eight ambush attacks—one between Mawlu and Pinwal, one between Nabar and Pinttin and one between Mawhay and Mawhan on March 4th, one near Nanmar on March 7th and one in the compound of Mohnyin University, one between Namana and Taungni and one near the entrance of Mogaung on March 8th.

“Around 40 soldiers of the military council were killed in the attacks between Nabar and Pinttin in Katha District and near Nanmar of Mohnyin District. Seven PDF members were killed in the fighting in Nanmar. Four of seven PDF members were killed in the fighting while two PDF members got arrested and killed alive,” an official from the KIA said.

Around 3 am on March 8th, a combined force attacked the military council troops stationed in the compound of Mohnyin University. A total of 18 soldiers including a major were killed in the attack.

At around 7 am on March 8th, the combined force also attacked the military convoy heading to Mogaung Township between Nanmana and Taungni. Four military vehicles were destroyed and seven soldiers of the military council killed in the attack.

At around 9 pm on the same day, the combined force attacked the military convoy near the entrance of Mogaung. The ambush destroyed two military vehicles and killed four more soldiers.

The military convoy covered 27 vehicles when it left Sagaing for Kachin. According to the frontline information, the military convoy included arms, rations and aviation fuel.

Only 15 military vehicles arrived in Myitkyina.
