Mon civil organizations call on NMSP not to meet the military council again

September 19th, 2022

Ten Mon civil organizations called on the New Mon State Party (NMSP) not to hold the talks with the military council again as peace talks organized by the military council are just the fake ones and aim to seek a political exit.

“Peace talks shall not help support the emergence of self-determination as aspired by the ethnics and a federal union which can fully guarantee equality as the current peace talks is based on the 2008 Constitution. As a result, it will help prolong the circle of military slavery,” the statement says.

As the military council is striving to amend the 2008 Constitution and retain its power, the talk with the military council is the activation of the 2008 Constitution. In addition, the military council’s peace talks are just for-show. It is merely creating disunity between resistance fighters and the Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (EROs).

The coup leader recently said that the EROs which wanted to hold arms must transform into the Border Guard Force (BGF). It is crystal-clear that the EROs do not accept the idea of having equalization with the military. It amounts to tarnishing the dignity of the EROs, the Mon organizations point out.

Ten Mon organizations which called on the NMSP not to meet the military council are: Mon State Students Union, Information Department of Mawlamyine University, Mon National Council (Australia), Mon National Network, Yarmanya Federal New Force and five anonymous Mon-based social organizations.

Lagon Eain Bulletin conducted an online survey on whether the NMSP should attend the military council’s second-round peace talk or not. According to the survey, more than 90 per cent of respondents replied that the NMSP should not attend the meeting with the military council.

The military council’s second-round of the peace was attended by the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA), the Pa-O National Liberation Organization (PNLO), the Lahu Democratic Union (LDU), the Arakan Liberation Party (ALP), the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) and the Karen National Union/Karen National Liberation Army-Peace Council (KNU/KNLA-PC).

The NMSP has not revealed whether they will attend the second round of peace talk or not.

The NMSP separately attended the first round of peace talks with the military council together with the United Wa State Party/ United Wa State Army (UWSP/UWSA), the National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA)-Mongla, the Shan State Progress Part/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA), the RCSS/SSA and the ALP.
